I’ll leave the extended eulogies for those who knew the man and lived through his heyday as Alberta Premier.
What I will say is that Lougheed, despite being in politics long enough to make a lot of enemies, is one of the rare politicians who was respected across the political spectrum, and across the country. Voters from this blog voted him Canada’s Best Premier in 2007, and earlier this year the Institute for Research on Public Policy agreed.
Regardless of where you rank Lougheed, he was undeniably Alberta’s greatest political statesman, and one of Canada’s. The PC dynasty may live on, but this is truly the end of an era.

Reading now about the personal conflict he was going through when he was fighting Trudeau, elevates my opinion of him even further.
